Justice Ranjan Gogoi appointed as new Chief Justice of India
President Ram Nath Kovind officially appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI) on Thursday, September 13th, he is scheduled to assume office on October 3rd. The incumbent CJI Dipak Misra, who is about to retire, had recommended his name to the Centre for the post.

President Ram Nath Kovind appointed the new Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the new Chief Justice of India on Thursday, Seotmber 13th. Media reports say he will assume office on 3rd October. The incumbent CJI Dipak Misra, who is about to retire, had recommended his name to the Centre for the post. Misra on September 4 had recommended Justice Ranjan Gogoi as his successor, it was processed to President Kovind in order to issue the warrant and it was confirmed on Thursday.
Justice Gogoi is one of the 4 Supreme Court judges who had held the unprecedented presser in January this year, criticising the administration while raising issues within the top court. He was accompanied by the other three senior judges — Justice J Chelameswar (now retired), Justice MB Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph.
Born on 18 November 1954, Justice Gogoi enrolled as an advocate in 1978. During which, he practised in the Gauhati High Court on various matters. He was appointed as a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court on 28 February 2001.
Reacting to the development, Congress leader Randeep Surjewala the incredible credentials of Justice Gogoi is known to everybody and all the people are looking forward to a resilient court under his leadership.
He added that the Congress party welcomes his appointment and hopes that his tenure will continue to give justice to all as he has done in the past during his early career.
