New Delhi: An alleged attempt was made on Monday to attack Jawaharlal Nehru University student-activist Umar Khalid outside the Constitution Club of India near Parliament, New Delhi. As per Khalid and his friends, two men approached them and one of them had a pistol. They alleged that two shots were fired at Khalid; however, the JNU student-activist escaped unhurt. Khalid is recording his statement before the Delhi Police inside a room in the Club.
The pistol allegedly used to fire at Khalid has been seized. Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Madhur Verma has told Times Now that it could not be confirmed whether shots were fired. However, he confirmed that Khalid was attacked. The incident took place when Khalid was having tea with his friends outside the Constitution Club. “Whether firing took place or not is yet to be determined and can only be commented on after the forensic enquiry,” said Verma.
Meanwhile, sources have told Times Now that the pistol recovered from the spot is an old one, “rusted and jammed”. The cartridge couldn't have come out of the chamber, said sources.
Later, Khalid said that there was an “atmosphere of fear in the country and anybody who speaks against the government is threatened." A lot of reactions have started flooding the social media. Vadgam MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani has levelled serious allegations, while actress Swara Bhasker tweeted in solidarity with Umar Khalid.
Khalid was at the venue to attend an event called 'Towards A Freedom Without Fear' organised by an organisation named 'United Against Hate' and scheduled to begin at 2:30 pm. A special cell of the Delhi Police will do a reassessment of the crime scene. Police teams are present at the spot and the area has been cordoned off. As per Times Now sources, Umar had registered a complaint regarding a threat to his life.
An eyewitness has, meanwhile, said that three people approached them at the tea stall. “One of them got hold of Khalid which he resisted. There was a melee as a gunshot was heard. But Khalid was not injured. While the accused were fleeing, they fired one more shot".
The speakers at the event were Advocate Prashant Bhushan, journalist Arfa Khanum Sherwani, RJD's Rajya Sabha MP Manoj Kumar Jha, Delhi University professor Apoorvanand, retired IPS officer SR Darapuria, journalist Amit Sen Gupta, advocate Shadab Ansari, former Rajya Sabha MP Ali Anwar, Solidarity Youth Movement (Kerala) president PM Salih, Fatima Nafees (missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed's mother), Radhika Vemula (mother of Rohith Vemula), Fathima (Junaid's mother), Maryam (Aleemuddin's wife), Samaydin (Hapur lynching victim), Yashpal Saxena (Ankit Saxena's father), and Dr Kafeel Khan (the suspended paediatrician of BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur).
