Thiruvananthapuram: The rescue operations have been stepped up in flood-hit Kerala where several thousand are stranded and as many as 8 lakh people are displaced. The NDRF, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and the Air Force have been working together, with teams spread out over all affected districts, to provide relief to the flood victims.
As the operations are in full swing, the scare of the outbreak of diseases in relief camps is also suspected. “While no outbreak of any communicable disease has been reported, health experts opine that once floodwaters start to recede, the environment will become conducive for epidemic diseases,” an official was quoted as saying by NDTV.
In the worst floods of the century, over 350 people have lost their lives from May 29. On Sunday, the red alert was withdrawn for all districts in Kerala for the first time since August 9. However, orange alert remains for 10 districts. The state has suffered a loss of over Rs 19,000 crore due to the floods, CM Vijayan informed on Saturday. PM Modi also conducted an aerial survey of the state on Saturday and announced an immediate relief of Rs 500 crore. The water flow from dams in Idukki, Idamalaya, Peringalkuthu and Sabarigir has also been reduced as the rains abated.
